How to Delegate - Work Smarter, not Harder!

The best People Leaders are the best delegators. It not only boosts their team's efficiency but their own too.

Delegation is a vital management skill, yet it can be challenging to implement for many managers. Some may hesitate to delegate work for various reasons such as thinking it will take longer to explain tasks than to do them themselves, wanting to maintain a sense of indispensability by keeping certain knowledge, or feeling guilty about burdening others with additional work. Lack of confidence in the team's abilities or believing they are the only ones capable of doing the job right are also common barriers to delegation.

However, it's crucial to develop this skill as refusing to delegate can lead to negative outcomes. Overloaded schedules, misplaced priorities, and missed growth opportunities for Team Members are some of the consequences of not delegating effectively.

Remember, delegation is not just about task distribution but also about fostering growth and learning within your team.

Why Should You Delegate?

D = Develop skills and confidence in your team

E = Empower Team Members to take initiative and grow

G = Generate new ideas through collaboration

3 Golden Rules for Better Delegation

The Time Value Rule: If it's less than your hourly rate - delegate it!

·       Determine what your time is worth.

·       Delegate all tasks of lower value.

·       Focus on high value initiatives.

The 80/20 Rule: Focus on the 20% that brings 80% of the results.

·       80% of results come from 20% of effort.

·       Figure out your 20% of tasks and impact.

·       Delegate the less impactful 80%.

The 70% Rule: If someone can do it 70% as well as you, pass it on.

·       If somebody has at least 70% ability in completing the task, delegate it.

·       It will free up your time and help them grow.

·       It also gives an opportunity to aid the 30% through training, mentoring or coaching.
